Parents, groups and swimlanes

Make responsibility and structure easier to read with containers, groups, pools and lanes.

Put an element inside another

  1. Create the containing element or Group.
  2. Select the child and open Details.
  3. Choose the container in Parent. The editor stores the relationship by ID.
  4. Use a view showing both records to inspect the surrounding frame. Save the view and model.

Choose (none) to remove a Parent. The selector excludes choices that would create a containment cycle. A view can omit a parent while still showing selected children.

Group Grid columns by a property

  1. Add a consistent property such as Owner to relevant elements.
  2. Select Grid from Layout.
  3. Choose Menu → Group by…, enable grouping and select the property.
  4. Inspect the grouped columns and save the model.

Group By organises the presentation. It does not change Parent or create ownership relationships.

BPMN pools and lanes

Set Pool and Lane in each step's Details. Enter a new name to introduce a pool or lane, or use the suggested existing names. Exact matching names group steps together. Choose Horizontal or Vertical direction in model settings as appropriate.

Dragging a task adjusts its position within its lane; change the Lane property to transfer responsibility. Sequence flows must remain in a pool and subprocess scope. Use message flows between distinct named pools.

Nested work

Use Parent for a subprocess's contained elements and keep its internal sequence flows separate from the outer process. Document inputs and outcomes in the surrounding page so readers understand the boundary.
